Medical management at BIDPO means several things. Broadly speaking, medical management encompasses the support we provide to physician practices to promote efficient, high quality care.

More specifically, medical management includes the following:

  • Our nine Community Nurse Case Managers work to improve clinical care, quality and patient satisfaction by supporting the PCPs in meeting/ exceeding targets on the BCBSMA AQC, HPHC, Medicare Pioneer ACO, and THP process, outcome and patient experience measures.
  • We provide, in collaboration with MedVentive, educational materials on preferred formulary prescribing. We also provide detailed feedback to doctors regarding their own prescribing patterns.
  • We handle many aspects of the "back office" end of referral processing. This is critical for patient, physician, and staff satisfaction. Working with NEHEN (New England Healthcare Electronic Data Interchange Network), we helped develop the NEHEN Express automated referral submission system.
  • We work actively with our doctors to find appropriate in-network specialists for all patients.
  • We have focused some of our efforts around the following diseases: diabetes, coronary artery disease, depression and asthma.
  • The Clinical Guidelines and Algorithms created by CRICO are endorsed for use by BIDPO and are available online.
  • We are currently working with Anvitahealth and their product Anvita imaging CDS , a clinical decision support tool, which provides up to date clinically proven, recommendations for high tech radiology ordering ( MRI, CT, PET, and Nuclear Cardiology).
  • We assist our physicians in understanding and achieving our Pay for Performance incentives, administered by various payors.
  • Electronic Health Records- BIDPO requires its providers to use and have an electronic health record by the end of 2010 or within three years of joining BIDPO. We believe that EHR improves quality of care and is a critical requirement for optimal coordination of care. For the most part, physicians on the BIDMC campus use WebOMR as their EHR, and community based physicians implement and use eClinical Works. To promote EHR and ensure that our providers have the financial and programmatic supports needed to implement EMR, BIDPO and BIDMC initiated an EHR Project in 2007 charged with financial and implementation support for EHR implementation throughout our network. Our pilot practices are up and running and we are implementing new practices every month. If you want more information about our EHR implementation project, contact Leanne Harvey, EHR Project Director at lharvey@bidmc.harvard.edu.
  • We are working actively on the quality and efficiency measures in the Blue Cross Alternative Quality Contract (AQC).

We work most directly with the primary care physicians, but are also available to all of the specialists in our network to solve problems and improve the efficiency and quality of our systems. In that spirit, you should feel free to e-mail me at raparker@bidmc.harvard.edu, or call me at any time with concerns (617) 754-1005.
